The ALC Timeline: Focus on Action

Everything we say can be regarded as past-focused, present-focused, or future-focused.

•	Past focused: “We decided to eliminate the garage parking because of rising costs.”
•	Present focused: “I know this is a big inconvenience for many of you.”
•	Future focused: “We’re working on a voucher system that’s fair to everybody. We expect to have it worked out within about 10 days.”

Typical conversation is all over the place: past, future, present. What's important is where a leader’s focus is. Presentations are more powerful if they are future-focused. If leaders are perceived as being stuck in explanations or complaints, their credibility will suffer. This measurement tool helps leaders see where they are on the timeline so they can move the conversation into action.
